BRC V9 Gap Analysis & Mock Audits

 

The British Retail Consortium (and the rest of the Food Industry) has been talking about the launch of Version 9 of the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety for some time. Changes include more focus on skills and training, the food safety culture, how it is delivered and how it’s effectiveness is measured, expansion to the scope of the Internal audit programme and management of withdrawals to name but a few – are you ready? Internal Auditing Programmes

This is a difficult programme for businesses to nail for a variety of reasons. It could be that you don’t have enough Internal Auditors independent of the areas they are auditing, you may not know what Audits you need to conduct and when, you aren’t quite sure how to implement specific Customer requirements without introducing additional audits and no matter how hard you try, your Audit scopes lack detail and have become “tick-box”. Fear not - we can help implement a robust programme where frequencies and types of Audits are based upon risk assessment, re-write or amend existing Audit scopes to include Customer and Business requirements and design an Action Log which facilitates root cause analysis and timely close-out of non-conformances raised. We can even assist with conducting the Audits for you at pre-arranged times and days on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.

Incident Management

 

We have all experienced an “incident” in our factories in relation to our products and we think you will agree it isn’t pleasant! If product has left our control, it costs money, can result in loss of Customers and in some unfortunate cases, the incident can hurt someone. If the incident is internal only, it can still cause loss of production and tie-up resource unnecessarily. Most companies do a great job of focusing on containing the said incident: they gather all the key stakeholders to discuss what to do, they find out how much product is
affected, where it has gone and communicate with Customers quickly and in most cases the “pain” is short-term (thankfully). What some businesses need a bit of help with, is defining a robust process to manage the incident effectively whilst maintaining Customer confidence but also ensuring it doesn’t happen again. The right process will help you identify the key stakeholders and their roles, clarify who is required to do what, confirm who the Decision makers are and establish clear communication channels. Importantly, the right process allows you to focus on appropriate investigation and root cause analysis – it isn’t enough to
stop the line or the product leaving; you need to make sure you fully understand cause and only then can you prevent a repeat performance!

Some raw material supply chains can be complex; additionally, risks of substitution and fraud are increasingly prevalent due to the unfortunate war in Ukraine, increased energy costs, the labour crisis and rising prices, so today, more than ever, the effective management and maintenance of your raw material Supply programme and the Businesses whom you source from is paramount to ensuring your products are consistently safe and of the desired quality. We can help you to monitor your Suppliers, undertake risk assessments, maintain Supplier documentation (SAQ’s, GFSI certification etc.), conduct traceability
exercises, evaluate the supply chain, and even undertake Supplier Audits on your behalf.
